DES MOINES, Iowa — The winter storm has officially hit Des Moines, and is expected to last all day on Wednesday.

Fluffy snow-covered roads across Iowa early Wednesday morning. The most snow-covered roads during the early morning commute were in Southern Iowa, but a majority of the state is experiencing partial or complete snow-covered roads, according to the Department of Transportation’s 511 map, as of 8 a.m.

Des Moines Police announced that the snow ordinance remains in effect for designated snow routes. They urge residents to avoid parking on snow routes until further notice.

Police also advise people to stay home and avoid driving in the winter conditions if possible. Otherwise, they advise drivers to take it slow and watch for snow plows on the streets. According to officials, plows have several blind spots.

Residential plowing will begin after the snowfall ends and a final pass of snow routes has been completed. Officials urge residents to remain patient as the city is actively working to clear 2,200 miles of roadways.

Sidewalks must be cleared by residents within 48 hours after snowfall ends.

According to Des Moines Police, there will be no delay to waste collection on Wednesday morning. Residents should have carts outside by 7 a.m.
