DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Senate approved a funding increase for K-12 schools on Tuesday.

Following Governor Kim Reynolds’ proposal, the bill (SF 167) provides a 2% increase in school funding for the 2025-2026 school year — an increase that would provide roughly $8,000 per student. Senate Democrats attempted to amend the bill to an increase of five percent, but the amendment failed 31 to 16.

The bill was voted through mostly along party lines 29 to 18. Three republicans voted against it.

A funding bill in the Iowa House would provide a 2.25% increase as well as over $22 million for one-time supplement payments to school districts. A public hearing for the House school funding bill is scheduled for 11 a.m. on February 13 at the State Capitol.
