IOWA — Central Iowa is due for snowfall and we will get it this week. In fact, more than double the 4.7″ of snow we’ve received this winter looks to fall. We have three rounds of snow to get through between Monday morning and Sunday of this upcoming weekend.
Round One of Snow:
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for northwest to north central Iowa this afternoon at 3 PM through 3 AM on Tuesday.

An area of light snow will develop today in southeast South Dakota and drop into northwest Iowa through the afternoon.

The heaviest snow will fall from Sioux City to Algona and Mason City with 1 to 3″ possible. The snow will move south into Central Iowa after 10 PM. It will weaken somewhat and drop a dusting to 1″ in Central Iowa. This may make the morning commute slick.

Round Two of Snow:
A bigger snowstorm will develop over the Plains states of Kansas and Oklahoma. Low pressure will cross Kansas and Missouri bringing a swath of heavy snow up from the southwest across southern, central, southeast, and eastern Iowa. A Winter Storm Watch has already been issued for Southeast Iowa for Wednesday, but this area in the watch may expand.

The snow will begin around midnight Wednesday morning and fall throughout the day on Wednesday. Some of the heaviest snow could fall during the morning commute. It should be a drier fluffier snow, so it should add up easily.

Round Three of Snow:
Finally, a third large weather system will again bring a swath of measurable snow from Kansas to Michigan on Saturday. This again looks to be measurable and we’ll have some total estimates on this later in the week.
