Eastern Iowa mom and kids killed in crash in Indiana

BOONE COUNTY, Indiana — An eastern Iowa mom and two of her kids were killed in a crash on an Indiana interstate Friday morning.

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office in Indiana, at around 6:37 a.m. deputies responded to a report of a crash on I-74 westbound near the 51.5 mile marker, northwest of Indianapolis. When first responders arrived at the scene they found two vehicles in the ditch on the west side of the road and a semi-truck in the eastbound lanes of I-74.

Preliminary evidence shows that a Kia Soul was traveling eastbound on I-74 when it crashed into the rear of the semi, causing the Kia to cross the median and crash into a pickup head-on, the sheriff’s office said. The driver of the Kia, 27-year-old Ashley Morgan, and two of her children, aged two and six, died from their injuries at the scene. Morgan’s third child, an 8-year-old, was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition. The Morgan family was from Waterloo, Iowa.

The driver of the pickup and his passenger were transported to a hospital. The extent of their injuries were not released. The driver of the semi was also taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
