When will ice and snow fall in central Iowa on Saturday?

With sunshine and southeast winds we’re doing ok for February in Iowa temperature-wise. Your weather timeline below takes you into Sunday.

Saturday’s forecast includes snow and ice in Iowa. Travel north could become tricky.

Lows tonight will be sufficiently cold to allow freezing drizzle to deposit on surfaces. We’re expecting a little less ice than Wednesday to fall between about 3 a.m. and 9 a.m., but it will be enough to create troubles.

The drizzle will be followed by light snow during the morning into the early afternoon hours.

1-2″ totals are possible north of Highway 30 by early Saturday afternoon as seen in the two computer model forecasts below. The third image shows snowfall forecasts for the Des Moines area, which will see a dusting at best as it appears now.

Winds will pick up Saturday evening and could be strong enough to lower visibilities with blowing snow in the northern part of the state.

As we look ahead into the following week and as the images below show, snow chances get frequent, coming our way Tuesday and again late on Wednesday.

Highs for the next six days can be found below. Look for cold temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday.

A look at the Euro model ensemble forecast below shows additional snow chances as we head into next weekend and the following week:

Again today, extended forecasts look to keep us cold and wetter than normal…
