DES MOINES, Iowa — A suspect who was shot by Des Moines police officers Thursday night during an investigation into a methamphetamine trafficking operation has died from his injuries.
The Des Moines Police Department is revealing more details about the shooting that happened in the 1200 block of Maury Street around 8:41 p.m. Sgt. Paul Parizek, the DMPD spokesperson, said the suspect was a passenger in a vehicle that was under surveillance by members of DMPD’s Narcotics Section as part of a drug investigation.
The vehicle parked at a convenience store and the suspect got out and began walking westbound on Maury Street. Two uniformed DMPD officers detained the suspect and during the investigation, the suspect produced a weapon. The ensuing confrontation resulted in both officers firing their handguns.
Despite first aid being rendered at the scene and the suspect being transported to the hospital by Des Moines Fire Department medics, the suspect died.
Police said the man who died was 43 years old but have not released his name.
The shooting was recorded on the officers’ body cameras.
The driver of the vehicle that was under surveillance in the narcotics investigation, 52-year-old Jennifer Renee Stewart, has been charged with Controlled Substance Violation, a Class B felony. She is being held in the Polk County Jail.
Sgt. Parizek said the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative assignment, which is standard policy following an on-duty significant critical or traumatic incident.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the officer-involved shooting.
