DES MOINES, Iowa — Police are responding to multiple crashes across Des Moines Thursday morning due to icy road conditions — including some involving emergency responders who were dispatched to help.

Pleasant Drive between 63rd Street and Cummings Parkway was a problem area. The first crash happened just before 7:00 a.m. when a vehicle was unable to brake and hit a street sign, an occupant of the vehicle suffered a minor injury.

A Des Moines police officer on the scene told WHO 13 that an ambulance responding to the crash was also unable to stop and struck the vehicle that had previously crashed, pushing it from the street sign into a power line pole. Some of the medical team suffered injuries in the crash.

A third crash happened when a vehicle driving toward the accident was slowing to stop and was struck from behind by a truck that couldn’t stop in time. No injuries were reported in that crash.

Pleasant Drive between 63rd Street and Cummings Parkway is shut down as MidAmerican Energy is on the scene to take care of the broken powerline pole. City Works is also working to sand the street.

Another accident involving first responders happened around 5:20 a.m. as medics with the Des Moines Fire Department were responding to a medical call in the 1000 block of Lewis. Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department said a DMFD engine slid into a few parked cars because of icy conditions. No injuries were reported.
