BOONE COUNTY, Iowa — A former dog breeder who pled guilty to animal abuse in 2024 is back behind bars after multiple dogs were found hidden on his property.
In September 2023 an investigation began into Joel Paris, owner of Paris Puppies Paradise in Ogden after the Boone County Sheriff’s Office discovered nearly 100 dogs living in “deplorable conditions,” according to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. At the time Paris surrendered his breeding license. Nearly a year later, in July 2024, the ARL returned to Paris’ breeding facility in Ogden to rescue another 46 dogs.
Paris was charged with one count of Animal Neglect with Serious Injury or Death and three counts of Animal Neglect with Injury in connection to the rescue. He pled guilty to all charges and was fined over $2,000. He was also ordered to pay restitution, court costs, complete 25 hours of community service, and serve a maximum of five years in prison, the ARL said. His prison sentence was suspended and he was placed on probation.
According to the ARL, in October 2024 Paris was found to be in possession of more dogs, including dogs hidden on his own property and at other properties, which was a violation of his probation terms.
On January 22nd, Paris’ probation was revoked by a judge and he was ordered to serve prison time.
