Hawkeyes retire #22 jersey, honor Caitlin Clark legacy

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Following a win against #4 rated USC, the Iowa Hawkeyes honored Caitlin Clark in a ceremony retiring jersey #22.

Caitlin Clark has made a huge impact on women’s basketball, and it all started at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Before the game, Clark reflected on what it’s like returning to Carver Arena.

“I think reflecting back on my entire career, whether the beginning when I didn’t play in front of anybody to the very end, where we went to our second final four second national championship game and just how much things changed not only for our program, but how much things changed for women’s basketball in my time here,” said Clark.

Hawkeyes both past and present and the fans all watched as Clark’s 22 rose to the rafters to be forever immortalized at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

“I’m just very grateful and fortunate and it’s kind of a weird feeling coming back here and not being able to play, but it’s just really exciting time for this program, I’m very fortunate to be a part of it and I feel very lucky that a lot of my former teammates and former coaches are here and able to support me and a lot of friends and family.”

For fans, it was a once in a lifetime moment, a once in a lifetime event.

“Honestly, this is just such a memorable experience. Caitlin Clark has done so much for our university,” said Kristin Haggen, Hawkeyes fan. “We have loved cheering her on.”

“We’ve been everywhere. We’ve been to the (Indiana) Fever games, we’ve had season tickets here for several years, so go Hawks!,” Joyce Sadler told WHO 13 News.

Number 22, hanging up to forever inspire the future generations of Hawkeyes.
