BUENA VISTA COUNTY, Iowa — One is dead and two are injured following a car crash on Highway 71 near Storm Lake.

According to the Iowa State Patrol report, the crash occurred at approximately 5:04 a.m. on Highway 71 near mile marker 162, outside Storm Lake.

The crash occurred after an SUV that was traveling northbound on Highway 71 crossed the center line and struck a car that was traveling southbound. The SUV crashed into the car’s driver side headlight.

The SUV came to rest on the east shoulder of the road and the car came to a stop on the west side of the road.

The driver of the SUV, 27-year-old Derren Mauricio, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two occupants of the car, 21-year-old Estevan Rodriguez and 30-year-old Lucero Martinez-Juarez, were transported to the hospital with injures.

The Iowa State Patrol report says the cause of the accident is unknown. It is noted in the report that dense fog was present which authorities say reduced visibility.

The Iowa State Patrol has opened as investigation into the crash.
