QuadCities (WHBF) — There will never be another 22 and that will become a reality this weekend as Caitlin Clark’s iconic jersey is raised to the rafters. Sunday will likely feature a similar supercharged atmosphere to one’s we saw when Caitlin was playing.
The Hawkeyes will host #4 USC and superstar JuJu Watkins at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
“I think the energy will be really great,” Iowa head coach Jan Jensen said. “I’m so excited to celebrate her, because she’s just like every kid that dreams. She would see Megan’s jersey and that’s what everybody wants to shoot for when you get to a certain echelon.”
Clark’s presence may not only be relevant to her jersey retirement — but it could also provide the Hawkeyes a shot in the arm on the court
“Wherever Caitlin’s at, she brings the energy,” Kylie Feuerbach said. “It’ll be exciting wherever she’s at. I think she lights up a room with her energy, whatever it might be.”
The stage is big, and the challenge is great, but if there’s anybody that handle a circus it’s this program.
“We play out in front of a sold-out crowd almost every home game,” Sydney Affolter said. “It’s no different. There’s going to be a lot of outside noise and a lot of things going on, which is really great and cool, but obviously we want to use that to our advantage.”
“Regardless of getting to celebrate Caitlin, we were going to play this game,” Jan Jensen said. “I think I’m just trying to keep them focused on the opportunity we have, and then when that’s done, we can celebrate Caitlin.”
