DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department has released the name of the suspect who was shot and killed by officers earlier this month, as well as the names of the officers involved.
On the afternoon of January 24th officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to a residence in the 1300 block of East Tiffin Avenue to investigate a report of a wanted person at the home.
According to DMPD, officers were searching for 36-year-old Brandon Allen Mitchell, who had felony probation violation warrants for recent Domestic Abuse – Second Offense and Child Endangerment – No Injury convictions.
Preliminary evidence, including video recordings, show officers enter the home and announce their and a K9s presence multiple times, the DMPD said. After not receiving a response the officers entered the residence in search of Mitchell. During the search the K9 alerted to Mitchell’s presence in a closet, police said.
Mitchell is then heard telling officers that he’s armed with a handgun and an officer subsequently orders him to show his hands, to which Mitchell reiterates that he’s armed, the DMPD said.
Seconds after a loud noise and movement could be heard inside the closet, which the DMPD says the officers believed was Mitchell firing at them. Two officers then fired their weapons in Mitchell’s direction. Mitchell was shot and transported to a Des Moines hospital where he later died.
The officers involved have been identified as Senior Police Officer William Perez, who’s been with DMPD since 2017, and Senior Police Officer Michael Hoopes, who’s been with DMPD since 2020. They remain on administrative assignment.
According to DMPD, after the shooting a search warrant was executed at the home and no firearm was found.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is continuing the investigation into the shooting. More information will be released when made available.
