Des Moines mobile home park narrowly avoids 10 acre grass fire

DES MOINES, Iowa — Fire crews from multiple metro fire departments responded to a grass fire Wednesday on the northeast side of Des Moines at the 4100 block of NE Broadway Avenue.

The Des Moines Fire department reported that nearly 10 acres were burned at a field that was right next to a mobile home park.

Fire crews from Des Moines, Bondurant, Altoona, Pleasant Hill, and Delaware Township were called to the scene.

Eugene Smith, a resident at Broadway Mobile Home Park, said that when he first noticed the fire he ran to try to keep it from spreading to the park.

“They already called the fire department I was there with a shovel trying to get it so it didn’t get the trailers,” Smith said.

The Des Moines Fire Department reported no damage to structures and no injuries from the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
