What should replace Spaghetti Works on Court Avenue?

DES MOINES, Iowa — The space that the popular Spaghetti Works restaurant occupied in downtown Des Moines has been vacant for over a year, and attempts to turn it into a bar are stuck in the City of Des Moines’ Zoning Board of Adjustment.

In September the board was set to change the zoning of the property that Spaghetti Works was in to allow it to become a bar, however the Downtown Neighborhood Association intervened asking the board to reconsider.

Many people have concerns about what adding another Bar to Court Avenue could bring.

“Lot of the issues that have happened down here in Court, I think a bar could maybe bring some more of those issues,” said Amanda Johnson, a Court Avenue passerby.

Other people want a business with a community focus.

“I think there’s probably enough bars down here that you can choose from. So yeah, community focus would be my preference,” said Jeremiah Boeckermann, someone who walks down Court Avenue over his lunch break.

The Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment is set to revisit potential zoning changes to the Spaghetti Works property at its October 23rd meeting.
