Thousands of Iowans expected to join the 14th annual Healthiest State Walk

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative is hosting the 14th annual Heathiest State Walk on Wednesday.

The Healthiest State Initiative is a nonprofit with the goal of helping Iowans improve their health. Executive Director, Jami Haberl, says a healthier lifestyle starts with just one step, which is why they host a walk every year.

Haberl said, “Obesity rates continue to rise here in the state of Iowa. We’re tied seventh in the nation when it comes to obesity, as well as, we continue to see rises in other chronic health conditions, and getting physical activity can really help all of us.”

The nonprofit’s website states that one-third of Iowans are obese, and another one-third are overweight. They hope events like this encourage people to take the first step to living a healthier lifestyle.

There is at least one walk scheduled in all 99 counties across the state. Schools, businesses, and organizations are hosting their own walks. There is a walk open to the public in Downtown Des Moines.

That walk kicks off at the Wellabe Art Park, located at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Watson Powell Junior Parkway. The walk takes place from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., but coffee and water will be available from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
