DES MOINES, Iowa — A Japanese macaque that was born at the Blank Park Zoo in August now has a name.
On Tuesday the Blank Park Zoo announced that the baby Japanese macaque, also known as snow monkey, is named Yumi. The zoo said the name originates from Japan and Korea and carries multiple meanings, including beauty, abundance, and arrow.
Yumi was born on August 31 and has been thriving. Yumi’s mother, Miya, was born at the Blank Park Zoo in April 2012 and has two other offspring — Gigi who was born in 2017 and Shoyo born in 2020.
The zoo said Yumi’s birth is a large achievement for wildlife conservation. Japanese macaques are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP), which aims to maintain healthy and diverse populations to ensure a species’ survival into the future.
