The Unrivaled 3-on-3 women’s basketball league launches this weekend and while the biggest star in women’s hoops, Caitlin Clark, won’t be taking the court, Iowa Hawkeye fans can cheer on another favorite daughter.
Kate “Money” Martin was drafted to Unrivaled’s Laces team after her rookie WNBA season. The University of Iowa alum was a surprise second-round 2024 WNBA draft pick for the Las Vegas Aces. Martin’s rookie year started off strong as she worked into the rotation. During her first starting gig for the Aces on June 9, 2024, she scored a season-high 13 in a loss to the LA Sparks.
Martin’s second season in the WNBA will be on an expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries.
Unrivaled features six teams with six players each and was founded by WNBA All-Stars and Olympic gold medalists Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. Both are also playing in the league.
The games are on Friday, Saturday, and Monday with two games being featured for each event. They are being played in Miami at an 850-seat arena and will be broadcast on TNT or TruTV.
The league’s rules are different from what WNBA and college fans may be used to:
- Three seven-minute quarters with a fourth quart that is untimed
- Teams play to a “winning score” determined by adding 11 points to the score of the leading team at the end of the third quarter
- Shooting fouls will result in one free throw equal to the value of the shot. Fouled on a three? Make the free throw and it’s worth three points. Foul shots on and-1 situations are worth one point.
- Shot clock of 18 seconds
- Clock will stop on made baskets in the last 30 seconds of a quarter
Martin’s first game with the Laces is Saturday, January 18th at 1:00 p.m. CT against the Phantom. You can watch it on TruTV.
The rest of the Laces on the roster are Jackie Young, Tiffany Hayes, Kayla McBride, Alyssa Thomas, and Stefanie Dolson.
While Clark didn’t sign with Unrivaled, the league says they’ll always have a spot for her if she chooses to join.
“We’re always going to have a roster spot for Caitlin Clark,” Unrivaled president Alex Bazzell told Sportico. “We’re not applying a full-court press the way people think. We are letting her decompress from basketball. … She knows that we have a spot for her when she’s ready.”
