Mild end to week, but a cold blast is coming

DES MOINES, Iowa — Sunshine and south winds have improved our temperatures compared to yesterday, starting a warming trend that takes us through Friday. Your weather timeline breaks it down:

A boundary moving south tonight could kick off some sprinkles and/or light snow in northern Iowa this evening. The weather is otherwise quiet precipitation-wise.

Looking at temperatures over the next six days, a big swing is ahead as we move from a warm Friday to two cold fronts coming through late Friday and Saturday.

The European computer model’s look at the temperature departures from normal for Friday morning is below. The following image shows the breezy southerly flow that will be helping to pump milder air north into Iowa.

By Saturday, winds will become more northerly (below), dragging in what will eventually be the coldest air of the winter season so far. Wind chills Saturday morning will be in the single digits and teens below zero.

Beyond the weekend, the 6-to-10-day outlook hints at continued cold into next week:

Temperature anomalies Monday morning show 20 degrees or so below what is average for this time of year. It will be a cold MLK Day and Inauguration Day across most of the country.

It also appears a second push of cold air could hit us at the very end of January:
