AMES, Iowa — The hype around the Cyclones vs Kansas game continues to get bigger as the ‘Clones now ranked #2 in the nation. But one thing is not growing tonight, and that is the traditional line of tents with students camping in line.
The first tent appeared on Saturday night, and then a second one on Monday. As of Tuesday night 4 tents were set up, but one was coming down.
“We thought we could get a heater, but when we arrived here, some of the other generators were getting taken down, so we didn’t want attempt to go buy one from Walmart or anything or even just rent one and it eventually get taken,” said Collin Gilchrist, an Iowa State Student.
“No heaters, no generators is no fun, really because I’ve heard from others who are like veterans is like that they’ve been doing this for years,” said Hayden Brown, an ISU student. “Now just recently that they’re taking them down.”
Iowa State University is again enforcing a policy enacted several years ago.
“For safety reasons, open flames and generators are not allowed,” said Angie Hunt, spokesperson for Iowa State University. “ISU’s Department of Public Safety will be checking in with the students throughout the night. Students also are allowed to park their cars near the camping area.”
The two planned to remove their tent, and return to stand in line on Wednesday.
The first tent is still occupied by Ian Hurley, and Jabob Janni had their generator taken away, but say they are determined to stay first in line, even without any heater.
