UPDATE: A news release from the Davenport Fire Department gives details on Monday morning’s fire, which left three people dead.
The Davenport Fire Department was called to the 1300 block of W. Eighth St. for a report of a structure fire on Monday, January 6 at about 3:15 a.m. Five suppression units and two Incident Command vehicles responded with 17 personnel. Scott County Communications dispatchers said multiple 911 callers reported smoke and heavy fire coming from both stories of the two-story, single-family dwelling. Dispatchers told fire crews that two occupants of the home were trapped in the basement and could not get out due to smoke and fire blocking their exit.
The first crews on-scene found heavy fire conditions on the front exterior of the building. They stretched a hose line, extinguishing the heaviest of fire on the exterior portion of the house and transitioned to the interior fire area. Additional crews breached the rear of the first-floor entrance to access the basement stairs and found heavy fire conditions. They conducted an aggressive and coordinated attempt to access to the basement and rescued two people who were brought out to Scott County Medic personnel for treatment and taken to the hospital. Their conditions are currently unknown. One victim said more people were still on the second floor.
Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire while other crews searched for more victims. They found an unresponsive man who was brought out of the structure, transported to Genesis East, then airlifted by Med-Force to the University of Iowa Hospital in critical condition. Three additional victims were located, but they had sustained severe burn injuries and were dead. Their identities are being withheld pending positive identifications and notifying family.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
