DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa’s Third Congressional District’s Congressman Zach Nunn is back in Washington, D.C. preparing for a new administration.
Nunn was sworn in for his second term on Friday, but his first time being sworn in two years ago was delayed by the longest vote for Speaker of the House since 1859. Speaker Kevin McCarthy won in 15 rounds of voting.
“My first days of Congress were spent three days in a row, 15 votes. I think we got done at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. My family didn’t even get to see me sworn in,” said Congressman Nunn (R) IA-03.
Now Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was sworn in in just one round of voting, something Nunn said this demonstrates a unified House Republican front.
“I think this is a very important opening chapter for where the country is headed. We have a strong unified government who elected speaker Johnson,” said Congressman Nunn (R) IA-03. “But I’ll say this is bigger than Speaker Johnson. It’s about an agenda that is prioritizing border security, stopping fentanyl and human trafficking. It’s about making sure that we extend crucial tax cuts that we’ve seen actually grow our economy and it’s about reining in government spending and government overreach.”
The congressman said that House Republicans met with Senate Republican leaders to discuss a reconciliation bill President Elect Donald Trump has been asking for. That bill would encompass his top campaign issues: border security, tax extensions of Trump’s 2017 bill, and energy.
Nunn looked back at his first term with success in legislation put forward, he highlighted expanding leave policies for Iowa National Guardsman, and an extension of a farm bill. Nunn introduced an amendment on Friday, his first piece of policy this session, that asks for a balanced budget.
“It helps rein in government spending and treating it a lot more like a family does, only spend the amount of money you have coming in, not putting it on the nation’s credit card,” said Nunn.
