CLIVE, Iowa — A lost dog is now home safe after being on the loose for days, and it’s all thanks to the community.
Security footage showed Gus, a Labrador Dane mix, scaling a seven-foot fence at 4 Paws Unleashed in Clive on Monday.
“It didn’t surprise me, he is a fence hopper, but not a seven-foot fence hopper. So, I rushed to 4 Paws and they were frantically looking for him, keeping me up to date, and we have been on a chase since,” said Jillin Looman, Gus’ owner.
“I know it was a freak accident, and I don’t think any wall was going to keep him in, but as a business owner he was in my care and as the owner of a dog daycare and boarding facility this is anyone’s worst nightmare,” said Corrine Graves, owner of 4 Paws Unleashed.
The search for Gus spanned far beyond Jillian and 4 Paws. Gus’ escape became popular on social media after Jillian created a post asking for help finding him.
Jillian received hundreds of comments online showing Gus sightings, dozens of messages from individuals physically out searching for him, a DoorDash driver even called Jillian to let her know he was actively chasing after Gus. It all led to his safe return home on Thursday.
“This was beyond nice, this was a mission, and everybody acted like it was their dog. They were very concerned about him and if they didn’t hear any update within 20 to 30 minutes they were reaching out to me for updates. So, it’s beyond nice,” said Jillian.
Amongst 4 Paws, Jillian, and the community, Paws of Hope was a major contributor to the search for Gus.
Currently, Gus is at the vet and is recovering from an infection, but other than a few scratches, he is expected to be just fine.
