POMEROY, Iowa — Charges have been filed in a shooting and subsequent standoff that occurred on New Year’s Eve in Pomeroy.

On Tuesday morning multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment building. According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, two people suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to nearby hospitals. On Thursday, the sheriff’s office said the victims remain hospitalized but are expected to survive.

Following the shooting, law enforcement agencies were involved in a standoff in Manson that was linked to the shooting. Ben Smith, the Calhoun County Attorney, said the standoff ended peacefully.

On Thursday the sheriff’s office announced that Nicholas L. Benedict has been charged in connection to the shooting. He was booked into the Carroll County Jail on the following charges:

• Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury
• Reckless Use of A Firearm Resulting in Serious Injury
• Going Armed With Intent
• Assault While Displaying A Dangerous Weapon
• Obstruction of Prosecution

The sheriff’s office as well as the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are continuing to investigate the shooting.
