DES MOINES, Iowa — The first snowfall of the year in Iowa left a mark. Many experienced an alarm going off on their cell phones with a snow squall warning early Thursday morning. This is issued by the National Weather Service. It is issued when the snowmaker moving through shows signs of an intense burst of heavy snow. This can be blinding and a game changer if you are on the roads. It doesn’t usually last for more than an hour.

The heaviest snow fell along HWY 30 on this Thursday morning. Ames measured in between 4-5″ of new snow. The airport in Des Moines reported around 1″.

The snow will be moving out of the state this afternoon. Another chance for snow exists by Sunday morning in southern Iowa.
