Forecast: Rain changing to snow Monday into Tuesday

A lack of sunshine along with fog and clouds kept temperatures cooler today than Saturday as forecast. Your weather timeline takes you through rain, snow and chillier temperatures for the last day of 2024.

Expect fog to expand again tonight, especially in northern Iowa. Lows north of Highway 20 will fall to or below the freezing mark, so watch for a few slippery spots as fog and any drizzle may deposit on roadways.

Monday morning looks dry (and foggy), but rain looks to move in by the middle of the day.

Rain will change over to snow Monday evening from northwest to southeast.

Snow will linger into the morning hours on a chillier and breezy Tuesday. Expect a slippery commute to start the last day of 2024.

The European model’s snowfall forecast by Tuesday morning is below. In general, 1-2″ of snow looks like a good bet.

Looking at temperatures, whether we’d like to or not, it does appear to get chillier as the week progresses. Wind chills will be in the single digits by Wednesday morning. Enjoy the comparatively mild weather the rest of today into Monday morning.

Looking at all of the extended forecasts that follow, it appears that winter will be starting as we head into January and may not do so politely. Very cold temperatures and wind chills and possible accumulating snow look likely the week following this one.
