Man arrested after deliberately crashing into DMPD vehicle

DES MOINES, Iowa — One man has been arrested after stealing a car, evading arrest, and deliberately crashing into a Des Moines Police Department patrol vehicle.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, at approximately 1 p.m. 2nd Watch patrol officers were dispatched on reports of a vehicle stolen from a convenience store in the 3500 block of Indionola Avenue.

The vehicle was spotted by a DMPD K9 officer who attempted a traffic stop. The suspect refused to stop and fled from officers.

The suspect, 31-year-old Hugo Jacobo Vasquez, led officers on a pursuit. The pursuit was disengaged due to traffic conditions.

Sometime later, Vasquez was spotted driving in a mobile home park in the 2800 block of Southeast 14th Street. As officers approached the scene, Vasquez intentionally rammed into an approaching DMPD patrol vehicle.

Vasquez then abandoned the vehicle and proceeded to run on foot. After Vasquez refused to comply with officers, a taser was deployed and Vasquez was taken into custody.

The Des Moines Fire Department responded to evaluate Vasquez and one officer for injuries, neither required transport to the hospital.

Vasquez is charged with:

  • Theft – 1st degree (Class C felony)
  • Eluding (Class D felony)
  • Assault on PO with a weapon (Class D felony)
  • Possession of a controlled substance (Serious Misdemeanor)
  • Interference with official actions (Simple Misdemeanor)

Vasquez is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
