Forecast: Fog, drizzle and rain

DES MOINES, Iowa — We started the day with chilly conditions and clouds, but then parts of central Iowa saw some sunshine and managed to reach temperatures close to the highs we saw on a mild Sunday. The weather timeline below takes you into Wednesday in three-hour increments:

Our only concern in the near term comes tonight in the form of fog. Most of us will see cloud cover, which will keep surface temperatures warmer and prevent fog from forming. Where skies do clear, fog is likely.

Christmas Day looks cloudy as well, and air near the surface may moisten enough to produce drizzle at times during the day. But, the best precipitation chances look to come late Thursday afternoon through the same time Saturday in the form of rain. Timing of the precipitation can be seen in the gallery below. An early look at possible rainfall totals into Saturday evening follows.

Temperatures look to stay warm into the beginning of 2025 with above-average precipitation chances. Beyond that, we may return to a colder pattern.
