Des Moines teen pleads guilty to high-speed crash that killed couple

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines teen pled guilty to vehicular homicide on Wednesday in connection to a high-speed crash that resulted in the death of a Des Moines couple.

In November 2023 the Des Moines Police Department responded to a crash involving a Chevy Camaro and a Buick Century at the intersection of East 27th Street and East University Avenue. The driver and passenger of the Buick, identified as 76-year-old Fred Lehman and 79-year-old Mary Lehman, died from their injuries at the scene.

Later that month officers arrested and charged the driver of the Chevy Camaro, then 18-year-old Kameron Wright, in connection to the crash. Police said Wright was driving at excessive speeds and was driving under the influence at the time of the crash. He was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide – OWI and two counts of vehicular homicide – reckless driving.

On Wednesday Wright pled guilty to only two counts of vehicular homicide – reckless driving and one count of of operating while intoxicated.

According to the Polk County Attorney’s office, data retrieved from the Camaro showed it was traveling at 112 mph two seconds before the crash.

Metro News:

The plea agreement states that if Wright is sentenced to prison he must serve the vehicular homicide charges consecutively to each other (one after the other) for a total of 20 years in prison. The attorney’s office said the prosecution and defense will argue whether Wright should be granted a suspended sentence with a probation term of three years or if he should be sentenced to prison. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 13.
