Polk County man held girlfriend against her will for several days, police say

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Saylor Township man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly held his girlfriend against her will for several days.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, the investigation into the kidnapping began shortly before 9 a.m. on Monday when the victim reported to officers that she had been assaulted and held against her will by her boyfriend since Friday at a home near SE 10th Street and Scott Street. Police said the victim was able to call for help because the alleged attacker, identified as 44-year-old Miguel Mercado Quintero, left for work.

Police said the victim reported she had been hit and kicked repeatedly and had her hands bound up with rope and electrical tape. She also claimed that Mercado Quintero had fired a gun into the floor next to her, threatened to kill her, and made her write “goodbye” letters to her kids.

The victim had swollen black eyes and bruising to multiple areas of her body. Police said she is currently recovering from her injuries.

On Monday Mercado Quintero was located in Urbandale and with the assistance of the Urbandale Police Department was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Kidnapping – 1st Degree
  • Domestic Abuse Assault With A Weapon
  • Felon In Possession Of A Firearm

Mercado Quintero is currently being held in the Polk County Jail.
