DES MOINES, Iowa — Local unions in the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor put together holiday food baskets for families in need, including those impacted by the Tyson plant closure in Perry.
Union members donated enough food to create 300 baskets for those in need. The baskets were assembled at the Des Moines Area Religious Council on Friday morning and then distributed.

“Today was our holiday basket preparation and giveaway, and our local unions from south central, which is about 34-35, have donated and purchased baskets for their local members that are in need. Maybe they’ve had an accident maybe they’ve lost their job, maybe there’s been a tragedy in their home,” Paula A. Martinez, president of the South Central Federation of Labor, said.
The baskets included cans of fruit, vegetables, pasta, cereal, canned chicken and tuna, stuffing, and much more.
Since 2000 roughly 7,500 baskets have been put together, helping about 150,000 individuals in need across south central Iowa.
