Thriving Des Moines business needs another set of hands

DES MOINES, Iowa — They’re off the main road and are too busy for walk-ins, but it doesn’t matter, because Repinned Upholstery has it figured out.

“Well what is a room without furniture?” says Riana LeJeune of Repinned Upholstery of Des Moines. “There’s always going to be a need for it.”

They take old pieces and give them updated fabrics, fresh springs, and new purpose.

“Hand-carved wood is always a good indicator that there’s some quality there,” says co-owner, Justin Copeland.

Copeland and LeJeune will tell you all about quality furniture — what it is and isn’t.

“Usually I tell people if it takes some oomph to lift,” LeJeune explains, “that’s a good sign that it’s hardwood construction.”

“Coil springs underneath are a good indicator that it’s built well,” Copeland adds.

It’s funny to watch these two yin and yang their way around the shop in such perfect harmony, and then learn that they’re actually a divorced couple.

“We have a 13-year-old daughter that we are raising together,” Riana says. “So, although the marriage relationship did not work out, we believe the universe brought us together for her and for this business.”

They’ve made it work … and their work can be seen in homes and businesses across the state.

What they need now is more help. In 2025 the main goal here is to take on an apprentice.

“I’m looking for someone who can learn quickly,” LeJeune says, “that is open to constructive criticism, who sees a long-term investment in this industry.”

Along with another set of hands, they’re also looking to help the industry.

“We’re definitely looking forward to passing on those skill sets to someone because it is one of  those forgotten trades that’s slipping further and further away,” Copeland says.

It’s a trade that pays better than ever. A refurbished chair can run $3,000. A fancy couch can bring $20,000. And there’s more demand than ever.

“There are a lot of mid-century modern collectors in Iowa and all over the nation that crave these mid-century pieces and are willing to pay to have them restored,” LeJeune says.

If you’d like Repinned Upholstery to hire you, here’s your chance. If you’d like to hire them, well … better call first.
