First freezing rain of the season is possible in Iowa Friday

DES MOINES, Iowa — This Wednesday is going to be cold and windy with most of the state feeling like the single digits. The strong northwest wind will die down by Thursday with more cold air on the way. There is a chance for light snow in southern Iowa by Thursday morning with under a half inch possible.

Light Snow Thursday Morning

The biggest storm system of the week will hit Iowa by Friday. If you are traveling after 7 PM on Friday and before 7 AM on Saturday, you may encounter some slick spots. Freezing rain can turn a regular road and sidewalk into a skating rink in no time.

Freezing Rain Friday Night

Some warm air and moisture will be moving into the state. Right now it looks like freezing rain will start to fall after dark on Friday. The temperatures should warm up rapidly on Saturday changing the moisture back to rain. This will also melt any of the recent precipitation.

Rain/Freezing Rain/Snow Saturday at 1 AM

The wintry mix will move out of Iowa by sunrise on Saturday. It is going to be dry and warm for the rest of the day. More rain is possible by Monday with temperatures well above the freezing point.
