DES MOINES, Iowa — Hundreds of people showed up for the Special Olympics Iowa Polar Plunge at the Raccoon River Park.
More than 200 people came out for the dip in the river to help raise money for Iowa Special Olympics and Unified partners. Those who wanted to support the cause were able to take the dip solo, with friends, toss the boss, sponsor an individual or team, or volunteer at the event.
Individuals had to raise a minimum of $75 to join, and participants received a t-shirt, admission to the plunge pre-party, a meal, and prizes.
“It is inspiring to see the public come out and support not only the athletes within their own community, but all Special Olympics Iowa athletes. The West Des Moines Polar Plunge is our largest community plunge of the year,” shared Maddie Cory, Event Director.
All proceeds benefit Special Olympics Iowa helping provide year-round sports training and competition, health education, and leadership programs.
Last year the West Des Moines plunge raised more than $425,000 for Special Olympics Iowa and Unified partners.
“The West Des Moines Polar Plunge is also one of the only traditional Polar Plunges we have left. We host eleven Polar Plunges around the state each year, and West Des Moines is one of only two that still plunge into a lake or river. It’s also different from every other location in that we provide a breakfast beforehand instead of a post-party lunch,” Cory said.
