Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst meet with Trump administration nominees

DES MOINES, Iowa — Both of Iowa’s United States Senators are busy this week meeting with nominees for positions in the Trump administration cabinet.

Senator Joni Ernst took to X after meeting with the nomination for U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Wednesday.

“I appreciate Pete Hegseth’s service to our country, something we both share. Today as part of the confirmation process, we had a frank and thorough conversation.”

The post came with Hegseth appearing to have trouble garnering support from Republican senators. Hegseth told reporters in Washington D.C. on Wednesday that he would not be stepping down with concerns about his treatment of women and use of alcohol.

U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R) from North Dakota on network news Wednesday morning said that Ernst would be an obvious pick for the cabinet.

Senator Chuck Grassley met with the nomination for United States Attorney General, Pam Bondi on Monday this week, and met with the pick for United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Wednesday.

Speaking with local reporters on Wednesday, Sen. Grassley was asked about how he would feel if Ernst was nominated for a cabinet position.

“Well we have a nominee before the Senate proposed by the President for that position of Secretary of Defense right now. So I think it is premature to talk about another nominee,” said Sen Grassley (R). “But I do want to say something very positive about Senator Ernst … she’s a very strong leader for our troops and national defense. She’s a very strong member of the Senate Armed Forces committee and I think that gives her all of the recommendations a person would need to be a leader in national defense. But right now we have a nominee.”

Grassley plans to meet with Hegsmith at the beginning of next month.
