DES MOINES, Iowa — A baby girl is now in the care of the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services after being surrendered via the Safe Haven Law.
According to Iowa HHS, the baby girl was born on November 11 and will be placed in the care of a foster family until a permanent family is found.
The baby girl is the sixth baby to be relinquished via the Safe Haven Law in 2024. Last year 10 infants were relinquished to HHS. Since the law went into effect over two decades ago a total of 72 infants have been surrendered.
The Safe Haven Law allows parents who are in crisis and believe they are unable to care for a child to surrender an infant up to 90 days old at a designated safe location, like a hospital, police station, or fire station, without the fear of prosecution. HHS takes the infant and places them in a foster home until a permanent home is found.
