DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department on Monday released the name of the 70-year-old man who was shot and killed by officers last week.
On November 26th at 6:07 am, officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to 430 Grand Avenue on a report of a man pointing a gun at a woman. When officers arrived at the scene they saw through a window that the suspect and one other person were in the lobby of the building.
According to police, the officers saw the suspect holding a pistol in his hand and that the suspect pointed the pistol in the officers’ direction, resulting in the officers firing their weapons. The suspect, who has now been identified as 70-year-old Charles Leonard, died at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the gun Leonard was holding was a pellet gun that didn’t have the orange-colored safety cone attached, police said.
Police said the two officers who fired their weapons are on paid administrative assignment, per department policy. The officers have been identified as Senior Police Officer Christian Bishop and Senior Police Officer Lanny Herzog. Both have been with the Des Moines Police Department since 2022.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, assisted by DMPD detectives, are continuing to investigate the shooting.
