Des Moines Police report increase in OWI arrests, advise caution

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department reported an increase in OWI arrests beginning Wednesday afternoon, they are advising people to be cautious during the holiday weekend.

In partnership with the Iowa Governors Traffic Safety Bureau, on Wednesday, extra officers were on the street in Des Moines.

According to officers between the hours of 5 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Thursday six drivers were arrested on OWI charges. Including,

  • A 21-year-old male who was found passed out in the driver’s seat of a vehicle shortly after 5 p.m. A three-year-old child was found in the backseat, the man has been charged with OWI – 1st offense and child endangerment.
  • After leading officers on a vehicle pursuit, a 35-year-old male was arrested just before 10:30 p.m. He has been charged with OWI -1st offense, eluding, reckless driving, and interference with official acts.
  • Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian being hit in downtown while using a crosswalk just before 1:00 a.m. The car fled the scene but officers located it nearby and charged a 27-year-old with OWI – 2nd offense and leaving the scene of an accident.
  • After running a red light, a 19-year-old male led police officers on a vehicle pursuit just before 2:30 a.m. He fled to his home and attempted to hide in the home. He is charged with OWI – 1st offense, eluding, interference with official acts, and traffic offenses.

The Des Moines Polic Department ensures that they will be vigilant and alert for impaired driving and dangerous driving behaviors. They encourage everyone to have a safe plan home if you intend to head out and celebrate.
