‘It’s how you finish’: Hawkeye seniors looking to go out on top

It’s the end of an era: 23 seniors will graduate from Hawkeye football. Many of them led this program to Big Ten championship appearances, bowl games and 10-win seasons. This senior class accounts for 92 collective wins for Iowa.

These men will walk out of the tunnel at Kinnick Stadium one final time as Hawkeyes to greet their families at midfield. After that, they will aim to take down Nebraska and finish their final home game on top.

HOW TO WATCH

 Iowa vs. Nebraska: Friday, Nov. 29th – 6:30 p.m.
WATCH: NBC, WHO 13 and the Peacock app
                LISTEN: Hawkeye Radio Network

“Coach Wallace always talks about how it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” Jay Higgins said. “My career is finishing up. I’m just focused on finishing on the right note. So hopefully there’s a good taste in everyone’s mouth when I do hang it up and everything’s over.”

“It’s bittersweet for sure,” Luke Lachey said. “It’s obviously a very historic stadium and something that we never take for granted even just going in there to practice.”

“That’s the only thing I’m going to remember 10 years, 20 years down the road,” Sebastian Castro said. “I’m going to remember how this game went. I want to leave it how I want to leave it.”

Iowa has defeated Nebraska eight of the last nine times they’ve faced. But that one loss came at Kinnick two years ago. The Huskers came into Kinnick Stadium and spoiled a Big Ten West title and a trip to Indianapolis.

“It’s more about this year and this team going in the game, but understanding that these guys are going to come in ready to go,” Mason Richman said. “That year, they had an interim head coach. Now they’ve got something rolling over there.”

Matt Rhule and company just clinched their first bowl-eligible season in eight years and will look to spoil another Senior Day this Friday. Iowa’s looking for their ninth consecutive season (2020 excluded) with eight or more wins.
