Des Moines International Airport prepares for busy travel day

DES MOINES, Iowa — Nearly 6 million Americans are taking domestic flights during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), and the Des Moines International Airport had a smooth start.

The week of Thanksgiving is the busiest travel period for airports, and Wednesday is projected to be the busiest day. Sarah Hoodjer with the Des Moines International Airport said there will be 51 flights going out on Wednesday, while there were 42 flights that went out of Des Moines last Wednesday.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) previously told WHO 13 News that the busiest time of day for the Des Moines International Airport is between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. every day. With the increased volume of travelers on Wednesday, the airport had limited problems.

Only one flight was delayed before 7 a.m., which was an American Airlines flight to Washington D.C.

Despite the airport being known for having small lines, if any, officials recommend passengers get to the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

Hoodjer also expects an increased volume of travelers this weekend, as more than 100 flights are expected to land in Des Moines.
