OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The First Congressional District recount is underway. On Monday the recount was taking place in Warren County and in Mahaska County. In both cases the three-person recount involved a panel with a representative for both candidates, and one neutral member to help facilitate the recount.
Around 4:15 p.m. Mahaska County Auditor Teri Rogers read the results of the recount.
“For the Mahaska County recount, for the US House of Representatives District 1 race. We put 11,017 ballots through the scanner. There were 10,577 voted for this race. 7,403 votes going to Miller-Meeks, 3,174 to Christina Bohannan, 436 under-votes, and four over-votes,” said Rogers
Miller-Meeks gained five votes from the original count.
For the members of the recount panel, it was a long day — around seven hours — to recount some 11,000 ballots from Mahaska County.
“We spent our time opening up the ballots bundling them up for handing them over to person counting,” said Eric Palmer, who was representing the Bohannan campaign. “We all just took this job seriously, there is integrity in our voting system in this country and I’m glad to be a part of that process.”
