Iowa Supreme Court hearing oral arguments in Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — The Iowa Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case at Marshalltown High School in Marshalltown Tuesday night.

Steve Davis, the Director of Communications for the Iowa Judicial Branch, said that the Iowa Supreme Court holds multiple cases yearly in different communities across Iowa to allow the public an opportunity to see how the court operates.

“Usually the court hears oral arguments here in Des Moines at 9:00 in the morning and 1:30 in the afternoon, which is not convenient at all for anybody in Marshalltown that may want to come and see them argue. So this is bringing the court to the people so they can watch their Supreme Court in action,” Davis said.

Students at Marshalltown High School will also be able to attend the oral arguments, something the school district hopes they attend.

“So for it to come right here and be accessible to our school community can’t be any better than that,” said Dr. Theron Schutte, the Superintendent of Marshalltown Schools, “Obviously we’re definitely pushing hard with the kids that are in and will be in government this year, but we’re hopeful it will appeal to a broader range of students than that.”

The arguments begin at 7:00 p.m. and are taking place in the Marshalltown Performing Arts Center at the high school. They are open to the public and free to attend.
