DES MOINES, Iowa — On Monday students at DMACC turned surgical wraps into sleeping mats for the homeless community.
DMACC’s Ankeny and Urban Campus Student Nurses Association and DMACC Surgical Technology Program teamed up with Joppa and other community agencies to make and distribute the sleeping mats.
The sleeping mats are made out of blue surgical wraps, which are used to cover sterile surgical equipment and materials and are typically discarded after one use. Students sewed the wraps into waterproof sleeping mats, pillows, and even handbags.
“One of the purposes for this event is to connect the community to our college, the Des Moines Area Community College,” John Hadley, surgical technology program chair at DMACC, said. “We are a community college and we want to give back to the community. We also want to inspire students and any of the volunteers to help out for the homeless through other community service projects and this is a good way to link them together and get information to them on how to achieve that goal.”
Hadley said a similar event will be planned for the spring.
