DES MOINES, Iowa – A brief rundown of results from some of Iowa’s legislative races of note from Election Day:
Looking at the Senate side of the Statehouse, in District 20 in Polk County, Republican challenger Mike Pike leads incumbent Democrat Nate Boulton by just 43 votes with 100% of the votes reported. With that close of a margin, a re-count could be initiated.
In the state’s most expensive legislative race, Democrat Matt Blake unseated five-term Republican incumbent Brad Zaun in District 22 with 52% of the vote. Blake is a Judge Advocate with the Iowa Army National Guard and previously served on the Urbandale city council. Zaun is a former mayor of Urbandale.
In District 14, Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott is looking to hold off Republican challenger Dallas County Supervisor Mark Hanson in the western part of the metro. With 100% of votes reporting, the outcome is still too close to call with Trone Garriott leading by 19 votes. A recount is likely.
On the Iowa House side of elections, former U.S. Representative David Young returns to the Iowa House, defeating Democrat opponent Laura Snider by 6% in District 28.
In Altoona’s District 40, Republican Bill Gustoff leads Democrat Heather Sievers by 321 votes with 100% of votes reported.
Democrat Sue Cahill was unable to hold onto her seat in District 52 in Marshalltown against David Blom. Blom won the district with 52% of the vote.
In Grimes, Republican Dan Gelbach successfully holds off Democratic challenger Lynne Campbell with a 10% difference in the vote to win District 46.
Democrat Reverend Rob Johnson will be taking over for the retiring Ako Abdul Samad in District 34, which covers much of Des Moines, after defeating Republican Danielle Duggan with 76% of the vote.
