DES MOINES, Iowa — This weekend Reggie’s Sleepout is holding it’s 20th anniversary event to raise funds for the fight against youth homelessness.
Reggie’s Sleepout honors Reggie Kelsey, who aged out of foster care at age 18 but was found dead within a year due to lack of resources and support. Held by Iowa Homeless Youth Centers, the event raises money and awareness by putting participants in someone else’s shoes.
Participants build cardboard shelters or pitch tents and spend the night on the Drake Stadium field. Food vendors, yard games, and speakers will be set up along the field for participants.
President and CEO of YSS Andrew Allen sat down with WHO 13’s Erin Kiernan to discuss this years event and how things have changed since the sleepout’s commencement.
WHO 13’s Erin Kiernan will deliver opening remarks for the 20th anniversary event. While WHO 13’s Skyler Stamps will be partaking in the sleepout. Tune in to the WHO 13 News at 10 p.m. on Sunday to see Stamp’s journey.
