POLK COUNTY, Iowa — A 19-year-old Des Moines woman died Tuesday after law enforcement officials said her car hit the rear of a disabled semi-trailer that was on the shoulder of I-35.
A crash report from the Iowa State Patrol said Emilie Anne Vanwinkle was traveling northbound on I-35 near Elkhart around 3:37 p.m. when she lost control of her Mercury Sable. The car struck the rear of a semi-trailer that was on the outside shoulder due to mechanical issues.
Vanwinkle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The ISP is continuing to investigate.
