DES MOINES, Iowa — The government shutdown is now threatening the funding for LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. It helps pay for a portion of heating costs for qualifying low-income households.

The program could see delays if the shutdown continues.

“The Community Services Block Grant and the Energy Assistance Program both normally are funded by October 1st, we would have those award amounts; that has not happened due to the shutdown, but because there has been some carryover money available, we’re able to continue our operations,” said Jean Logan of Community Action Agency of Siouxland.

You can still apply and qualify for LIHEAP, but the assistance will be delayed. Approved households will still receive a moratorium, meaning their energy utilities can stay on even if they fall behind on paying the bill.
