DES MOINES, Iowa – One of the most Instagrammable spots in Des Moines is the crouching figure made up of white letters known as “Nomade.”
But a visit to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park could leave you disappointed — “Nomade” appears to be on the move.
The sculpture has been disassembled and shipped off for repairs. It will be stripped down to the metal, repaired if needed, given fresh bolts and hardware, and then repainted.
Pieces of the sculpture park need this kind of repair work over time. Unlike other artworks, sculpture park statues are exposed to the elements.
Other improvements are also planned for the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, including raising the nameplates for the pieces of art and adding a paved area up to the “Love” sculpture. You can also expect more artwork to undergo repairs similar to “Nomade.”
As for when “Nomade” will return, you can expect to see it in spring 2026. In the meantime, perhaps other sculptures will have the opportunity to become just as Instagrammable.
