DES MOINES, Iowa – The man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s mother and father is scheduled to go on trial Monday on first-degree murder and attempted murder charges.
Hamza Smajlovic, 25, is charged with the murder of Ruth Robison, 45, and the attempted murder of Tony Robison. He is also charged with three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury in connection with the deadly shooting on November 1, 2024.
Police were called to a home in the 200 block of 51st Place in Saylor Township on a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Ruth Robinson and Tony Robinson suffering from gunshot wounds. Ruth died at the hospital and Tony was seriously injured.
Police say Smajlovic shot both as they helped their daughter move out of Smajlovic’s home following a recent breakup.
Smajlovic was also charged with violation of a no-contact/protection order after allegedly calling his ex-girlfriend from the Polk County Jail, using another inmate’s account.
He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Smajlovic’s jury trial is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday.
