Des Moines’ Downtown Farmers’ Market wraps up for the season

DES MOINES, Iowa — On Saturday, the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market wrapped up it’s 50th season.

Hundreds of vendors lined the streets of downtown for the last day of the market. One of the vendors was Mama Africa, a food stand offering authentic African style foods from owner Ventica Woods.

Mary Carpenter is the owner of her small business, Zimma & Zekes. She sells homemade bandanas that she makes from cloth that is sourced from two other small businesses. She also offers handmade jewelry including earrings and necklaces.

This week alone, Carpenter made 132 bandanas and had to think fast when her sewing machine broke halfway through. This is her first year at Des Moines’ Downtown Farmers’ Market.

Those who will miss the Downtown Market are able to visit a few indoor markets being held until the market’s return in the spring. The winter farmers market will be hosted November 21-23 at the Iowa Events Center. More information on that event can be found here.
