Ex-Iowa man sentenced to prison for 2017 disappearance of teen

WINNESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa — A former Iowa man who was found guilty of the death of a teen missing since 2017 was sentenced to prison on Tuesday.

In the spring of 2017, Jade Marie Colvin, 15, travelled from Arizona and arrived at her destination, a rural Winneshiek County farm that was at the time owned by James David Bachmurski, Sr. According to court records, Colvin and Bachmurski had been communicating online unbeknownst to Colvin’s mother who had reportedly been in a relationship with Bachmurski for a short time.

Not long after Colvin arrived at Bachmurski’s farm she was reported missing. The Iowa Attorney General’s Office said she was last seen at a Decorah Walmart with Bachmurski in March of that year and had stopped responding to messages. As of 2025, Colvin’s body has not been found.

It would be roughly five years later that the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the US Marshal Service and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with information regarding Colvin’s disappearance. The sheriff’s office said that a years-long investigation was launched and resulted in the arrest of Bachmurski in Georgia, where he had been living.

In September, a jury convicted Bachmurski of second-degree murder in connection to Colvin’s disappearance. According to court records, shortly after the conviction Bachmurski’s attorneys filed a motion for a new trial, stating that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Bachmurski was responsible for Colvin’s death. That motion was denied.

On Tuesday, a Winneshiek County judge sentenced Bachmurski to a maximum of 50 years in prison. He must serve a minimum of 35 years.
